Queets Corner
Queets Corner
The Queets Corner project area is a 74-acre project located in the western foothills of the Olympic Mountains in the Queets HUC-10 watershed and Salmon River sub-watershed.
Sold in 2020, the Olympic Forest Collaborative provided support with presale planning, thinning prescription, monitoring protocols, and field layout for this stewardship sale of 60-year-old stands in the Queets watershed. The OFC’s long-term desired future condition for Queets Corner was to obtain habitat characteristics that are found in fully functioning late successional/old growth forest.
Of the 74-acre project area, 46 acres were selected for harvest. Soon after harvest in 2021, multiple culverts were removed, and several sections of no longer needed roads were decommissioned to improve habitat quality. Invasive weed treatments and deadwood creation were additional elements of this treatment.
This project was conducted in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources’ Good Neighbor Authority program, an initiative that adds expertise and capacity to Olympic National Forest’s timber and restoration programs.
